We are excited to share with you the very first Atlanta Black Theatre Festival! From October 4th through Octonber 7th, Atlanta will become the epicenter of Black Theatre as companies from across the country will meet here for over 40 plays in 4 days. I could never tell you all there is to say about the festival, so please click the link to the ABTF website.

Fresh off of a successful run in Atlanta, Georgia- SistaStyle Productions, in conjunction with Atlanta’s New African Grove Theatre, presents Gus Edward’s “Louie & Ophelia.” Featuring Keith Franklin and Mary McCallum, this play is being presented in a one of a kind partnership between New African Grove and SistaStyle Productions, making both Atlanta & Nashville premieres. In this charming stage play, a working-class couple fall in love and struggle to maintain a relationship without giving up their old dreams, habits, and commitments. Ophelia is a cold go-getter fiercely devoted to the idea that her children become professionals, while Louie is a gregarious family man who just wants to build a home. "Louie & Ophelia" paints a real, gently humorous portrait of contemporary love and its trials. During the Atlanta run, “Louie & Ophelia” received the Atlanta Goldstar “Roar of the Crowd” award. AAPEX's "Emerging Theatre of the Year 2011": New African Grove Theatre (Atlanta)

AAPEX is pleased to bring to your attention our "Emerging Theatre of the Year 2011" Atlanta's NEW AFRICAN GROVE THEATRE, Keith Franklin, founder & Artistic Director. 

In naming his company, Mr. Franklin references America's first African American Theatre, the African Grove Theatre, which was founded in 1821 by William Alexander Brown and James Hewlet in NYC. The company included famed Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge, who eventually made his way to Europe and died in Poland. The African Grove Theatre was burned to the ground in 1826.
