Established in 1986, Urban Stages' Emerging Playwright Award has been presented to the best of new, innovative playwrights whose works speak to the whole of our society. Urban Stages' ongoing mission is to develop and produce new, exciting multicultural works that are issue-oriented. A cash prize of $500 (in lieu of royalties) will be awarded to the winner. NEW! SEEKING TEN MINUTE PLAYS FOR ALL OUT ARTS’ FESTIVAL Fresh Fruit Festival invites all local playwrights to stage their 10 minute play May 21st at the Nuyorican Poets Café, 236 E 3 St, 7-9pm for third ALL OUT ARTS annual short play contest. Winners will get a performance at the Fresh Fruit Festival in July. The top two winners will get $100, $50 and $25 respectively. Plays produced can be staged as simply or as lavishly as the presenters wish, anything from a sit down reading to a workshop production is fine. Plays will be judged by a panel of community artists and audience responses. There will be a $7 production fee for plays selected. Open to all LGBTQ writers and their supporters. Once Upon A Time In Harlem: A Jitterbug Romance makes the cut!

Noted director and actress Petronia Paley will pitch D.C. Copeland's "dancical" Once Upon A Time In Harlem: A Jitterbug Romance to a dozen Broadway producers this Sunday, July 22nd at the legendary Players Theatre in NYC. Sponsored by Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU), this is an invitation-only event for selected playwrights. At least one producer has won a Tony and many have been associated with Tony nominated productions including The Scottsboro Boys, The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess, Radio Golf, Clybourne Park, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Legally Blonde, and many more.

Call for Children's Plays (Deadline: 1/15)

Seeking CHILDREN'S SCRIPT submissions of all genres from emerging and established playwrights for "Titi Talula's Theatrical Reading Series", a new reading series for young audiences. Readings will be staged during the summer in various public locations in 2010. A committee will then select one play to be presented as a production Fall 2011.
GUIDELINES:
1. Accepting children's monologues, one-act plays, musicals and full length plays 45 minutes max in length. Plays that involve puppetry must be at basic level for children to manipulate puppets. All submissions must be written for the theater.
2. Accepting submissions written in English, Spanish and Portuguese. A combination of submissions with two languages, i.e. English and Spanish, accepted.
3. Submissions must be suitable for performing to or by children.
4. Submissions must have simple plot structures and be centered on exploring social issues that foster positive change such as community, diversity, equality, physical and mental health, substance abuse and violence prevention, protecting endangered species and environment.
5. All submissions must include the playwright's contact information, bio and resume, appropriate age range/ grade levels of submission, synopsis, number of characters and age range, genre type, running time, and copy of the full script. Also if the submission has been previously workshopped or staged include date, producer, theater company and location.
6. Selected works will be assigned a director and cast from our pool of talented actors.
7. Reading of selected work will be given 8 -12 hours of rehearsal and a Q&A forum with audience to help workshop play.
8. Submissions must be MAILED, please send through postal service. Scripts will not be returned.

The Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) is currently accepting submissions for its eighth season, scheduled for 4/19 through 5/2 at the Theater for a New City, in the Lower East Side of New York City. DUTF, presented by Creative Ammo Inc., is a two-week celebration of urban theatrical expression by a cross-section of playwrights. This annual event focuses on theatrical works that resonate with the essence of urban life and speaks to a whole new generation whose lives defy categorizing along conventional lines. For DUTF 2010, we plan to accept 12 theatrical works; six full-length productions (60-90 minutes) and six shorts (30-45 minutes). Each work is performed only once during the festival. Three of the outstanding works produced during the festival will receive $1,000 awards in the categories of Best Play, Best Short and Audience. To submit for DUTF 2010, please provide all of the following information in ONE (1) document file:

SEEKING MONOLOGUES FOR AND BY WOMEN.
Key City Public Theatre in Port Townsend, WA, USA, requests monologues by women playwrights for their second annual celebration of International Womens' Day, Here, There and Everywhere. They are particularly interested in receiving submissions by women writers from outside the United States and Canada. They will accept a maximum of two pieces per writer. Monologues may be sent in the body of email or as pdf or doc attached files. Please submit entries by email to submissions@keycitypublictheatre.org. Deadline: 12/31. Monologues must:
• must be by a female writer
• must be written for a female character
• must be a minimum of 5 minutes / maximum of 10 minutes
• may be stand-alone or from a longer work

ARKANSAS REPERTORY THEATRE CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ITS RESIDENCY PROGRAM.

The Arkansas Repertory Theatre announces a request for submissions for its playwrights’ residency program, Voices at the River II. The program, underwritten by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and designed to support African-American and Latino playwrights both nationally and in Arkansas, includes a two-week residency for playwrights, directors and actors at Arkansas Rep. The inaugural Voices at the River developed the works of playwrights Vanessa Garcia, Javon Johnson, Guillermo Reyes, and Ajene D. Washington in 2007, and honored Lynn Nottage and Luis Valdez for their contributions to American theater. Young Arkansan playwright, Spirit Trickey, was mentored in the creation of her play, One Ninth, and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, it became Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s statewide educational tour in January 2009. Full-length plays, translations and adaptations (providing rights have been secured) will be accepted through 1/31. Submitted work must not have been previously published. Prior readings of submitted work, however, are acceptable. There is a cast limit of 10 actors and a limit of one submission per year. Playwrights should include a biography with script submissions. Founded in 1976, Arkansas Repertory Theatre is the state’s largest nonprofit professional theater company. A member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT D), The Rep has produced more than 280 productions, including 40 world premieres, in its historic building in downtown Little Rock. Producing Artistic Director Robert Hupp leads a resident staff of designers, technicians and administrators in the creation of eight to 10 productions for an annual audience in excess of 70,000 for MainStage and SecondStage productions, educational programming and touring. The Rep produces works that range from contemporary comedies and dramas to world premieres and the classics of dramatic literature.

Strikingly Different Productions is currently seeking submissions for The 5-Borough Marathon of Short Plays: Staged Reading Series, 12/4 -5, at the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing, New York. This exciting and eclectic series will showcase new and diverse playwrights in the New York area. Plays should reflect life in the Five Boroughs. All submissions must be no longer than 60 minutes, no shorter than 15 minutes. Plays must be unpublished and unproduced (readings okay). No musicals accepted. At that time, you MUST sign a release allowing HOME to use the material in our database. Each time your work is introduced at auditions, your name and the selection of your work may be noted by Directors, Choreographers, and perhaps Producers. Your selections will be stored in a searchable database along with a link to your bio and your contact information.

You MUST own the rights to submitted work in its entirety. Collaborations MUST submit releases from ALL contributors to the development of the submitted work.

A Bronx-based multicultural theatre ensemble, and new play development lab, Actors Without Spaces, is seeking original submissions primarily from playwrights of color from all of the five boroughs. All contemporary, experimental, and provocative styles and subjects, one-acts and full-length stage plays only, small casts preferred. No musicals, no children's plays.
