Call for Plays by playwrights of color (March 31st deadline)

Theatre Nova deadline: March 31st

Theatre Nova in Ann Arbor, Michigan is a brand new, 501C3 nonprofit theatre launching its first season this year. We focus on new works and most of our season is filled, but another part of our mission is to produce playwrights of color that write stories for actors of color in non-stereotypical roles. This means we do not want to read another play about segregation in the 1960's or another play about Cesar Chavez or another play about 911. We do NOT want actors of color playing drug dealers, criminals, terrorists or slaves. Consider ways in which we can present the experiences of people of color in a way that is universal and speaks about the human condition more than stereotypes or historical conflicts. LGBT characters are greatly appreciated as well.

For this particular submission, we are accepting full-length plays from writers of color (male or female) with strong, three dimensional roles for actors of color (though there can be white characters in the play as well). Think of Gina Rodriguez's golden globe speech "This award represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes." Because we are a new theatre, we can have no more than 5 characters in the cast.

Please include in the body of the email:
 -A Synopsis
-A Character Breakdown (include races and ages of characters)
 -Set Requirements
-Brief Description of how this play promotes actors of color in a non-stereotypical manner. As an attachment
-20 page sample of script (any section that shows the best work)
-Full Script (both as separate attachments.

Any submissions that do not follow the requirements above will be discarded. We will only respond if we are interested in pursuing your script. Please do not ask if we received your submission or send any other unsolicited follow through. Email all requirements to RomanTeachesDrama@gmail.com

Call for plays (11/4 deadline)

New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Fellowship
Deadline: Nov. 4th

WHAT IS A 2050 FELLOW?
The United States is rapidly changing. The U.S. Census Bureau expects that by the year 2050, there will be 439 million Americans (there are 312 million of us now) and for the first time, there will be no single racial or ethnic majority.

These projections provoke thoughts about the transformations that will take place in the American landscape over the next 37 years—technologically, environmentally, demographically, and artistically. They are a catalyst for broader questions about our moral and artistic future. How do we define diversity? Whose stories aren't being told? What lies ahead for our world?

In response to these questions, NYTW has expanded its Fellowship program to support the diversity of voices that will make up this new minority majority. NYTW is re-affirming our responsibility to nurture artists who reflect this multiplicity of perspectives, challenge the dominant paradigm, and give voice to those whose experiences are not often heard.

The 2050 Fellowship is an expansion of NYTW's Emerging Artists of Color Fellowship, established in 1995 out of NYTW's fundamental belief that a diversity of thought, experience and culture is crucial to theatrical innovation. We remain committed to this conviction by expanding the way we identify an artist who is eligible for our Fellowships toward a more inclusive and wider range of artists of varied backgrounds and aesthetics.

As an institution, NYTW is constantly interacting with and being informed by the diverse body of artists we serve. We seek to listen and respond to untold stories and underrepresented voices, and our roster of artists has always embodied a multitude of communities. In addition, as both a laboratory for theatrical exploration and a producer of plays, NYTW supports projects that are aesthetically, thematically, and methodologically varied. We seek Fellows who reflect, celebrate, and practice this diversity, and who are dedicated and motivated candidates wishing to develop their talents and craft by participating in a dynamic, artist-centered creative community.

Call for plays from NY or NJ African-American playwrights only

Submit a work of 40 to 50 minutes to The Griot Festival.
Winner for Best Play will receive a prize of $2,500.
Winner of Best Actor and Best Actress will each receive $500.

The Griot Festival was created with the intention of offering a unique opportunity for playwrights / theatrical artists of African American descent who reside in NY and NJ. The festival’s purpose is to inspire and support both emerging and established playwrights/ theatrical artists of African American descent who would like to step beyond the page and get involved in the production of their work. In short, they will have creative input from the first sentence they write to the last curtain call. It is also a great opportunity to become familiar with all the elements of a theatrical production in the making and to become familiar with the process that translates writing into a living work onstage in a safe and supportive theatrical environment. Only plays from writers of African American descent in New York and New Jersey will be accepted. Submissions must be between 40 and 50 minutes long. This is a non-union company. All plays must be first runs, never produced before. The Festival will take place at the Cabrini Repertory Theater, a wonderful proscenium theater in Uptown Manhattan that also hosts two other festivals throughout the year: Thespis and Venus/Adonis. At Cabrini Repertory Theater, we consider ourselves a family and anyone who sets foot in our theater to stage a play is part of that family. Our team wants to make sure staging your show is a pleasure. First-time writers are more than welcome! Accepted plays will be considered on a first-come first-served basis. (The earlier you submit the better your chances are to be accepted into the Festival.) Submissions may close before October 15 if the maximum number of plays is reached. Call for Plays

The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is now accepting scripts for development during the *2014 National Playwrights Conference*. Applicants may submit works to the O’Neill’s Open Submissions Process through *Friday, October 25, 2012*. The National Playwrights Conference, which will celebrate fifty years of new play development during the summer of 2014, is led by Artistic Director Wendy C. Goldberg. The conference supports playwrights during the creation and development of new plays. Authors of selected works are awarded residency with a stipend, housing, meals, and transportation for July 2014 to support an intensive rehearsal process and two script-in-hand public readings.

Any play of any length or genre is eligible; however, to be included in the conference, the work must remain unproduced through July 31, 2014. Early submissions are strongly encouraged. Neither agent submission nor previous experience are required. There is a submission fee of $35.00 USD to support the reading and selection process. Both electronic and hard copy applications are accepted. The O'Neill takes its mission for the discovery of new work and artists to heart.

The O'Neill receives approximately 1,000 scripts for consideration and in each of the past three years, seven of the developed works were discovered through the open submission process. Submissions are sent to readers across the country and read blindly, allowing volunteer readers to focus on each writer’s voice and story, rather than a recognizable name or previous accomplishment. One or two works and/or collaborations each conference are at the invitation of the O’Neill, and help launch conversations with a larger national field.

The National Playwrights Conference, the O’Neill’s founding program, was launched in 1964. Playwrights have shaped the Conference from its very inception. When founder George C. White first gathered a prominent group of emerging writers to discuss their needs, the result was the O’Neill model – a place where playwrights can focus entirely on the development of their plays in workshop production without the pressures of commercial endeavors. More than 600 plays have been developed through the National Playwrights Conference.

Please direct any questions about the submission process to Anne G. Morgan, Literary Manager at (860) 443-5378 ext. 227 or email litoffice@theoneill.org.

A tip of our backward-wearing Kangols to Owa for bringing this to our attention.

Deadline: July 31st!

Do you have an idea for a one-person show that you’ve been sitting on? A two-person tour de force that promises to be fantastic? Perhaps a musical – a tuneful, bouncy one-act or a soulful, jazzy full-length? How about an experimental performance piece that tells a story with movement, light, sound?

Plus it’s free to submit, and there’s no cost to participate if accepted, so apply today!

We’re seeking some very specific kinds of works. Take a look, see if you’re a match: Currently Seeking:
 · Original solo shows written and performed by men
 · Original solo shows written and performed by women
 · Original short and full-length musicals
 · Original two-person shows
 · Non-traditional theatrical forms – movement pieces, puppetry, something unexpected.

No more excuses. Now is your chance to share your work in progress on stage in front of an audience. For full details and to apply, click here: http://www.emergingartiststheatre.org/submissions.php

Paul Adams,
Artistic Director

A note from DC Copeland: "I highly recommend submitting. I did and my award-winning dancical "Jitterbug!" was given a reading last March at the Tada! Theater. Directed by Petronia Paley, it was one of the best professional experiences in my life. Paul Adams is a great guy and made sure the Fest ran smoothly, a difficult if not nearly impossible task in itself. Of course, given this opportunity, it's important that you do all you can to make it work. Thankfully I had Petronia Paley in my corner. She's truly amazing and I couldn't have done it without her."
